The Downeaster “Alexa” 09/05/2010

The radio is having a Billy Joel weekend and I heard this song today for the first time. It’s one of those things one might call “hauntingly beautiful”. To explain the name: A Downeaster is a type of fishing boat. Billy Joel actually owns a Downeaster named “Alexa”, after his daughter. I borrowed the image from thesisprocrastination.com.

Billy Joel and his Alexa

The man and his boat

If I close my eyes, I can see the dark skies and faraway soft lights of boats out at see, when I listen to this. The strings make up the sounds of seagulls, the drums – the beating of the waves agains the hull. Wish I could do this song justice.

I made an approximate route, mentioned in the song.

Here are the lyrics.

List: Books 03/03/2010

Couple of days back, David has graciously offered me a chance to get some books off of amazon.com, since he will be getting some too. This was all due to my obsessive ranting about Skulduggery Pleasant, which is a very entertaining book (i’m trying not to say it’s awesome) and even though some of the bits don’t get explained, it works perfectly.

Anyway, there’s a bit of a snag in this genius plan. I don’t know what to order. So, I thought I’d make a list, as always, to help me think.

That’s it for Skulduggery. Also I’d like to have the ones with this cover art. I’m rather particular about my cover art and will try to get the one I like. I ended up without most Neil Gaiman books for this reason. Speaking of which:

There are probably a couple more Gaiman books out there, but these are the ones I’d like at the moment. Keeping within the genre… kinda… The song of ice and fire series (here’s where I stop being particular about the cover art, since I’ve never seen a whole collection in one place… and apparently, the cover art blows donkeys on a street corner) :

One of the sad facts is that my dad read “A game of thrones” and I haven’t. Although I have it. I just like reading in English. And the one I have isn’t in English. But what’s a list of books without a little smut.

To quote Tom Lehrer: Give me smut! Give me smut and nothing but! 🙂 Mind you, it’s not Barbara Cartland… And thank goodness for that! Yes, yes, I like smut. Sue me!

Anyways, this is all I can think of at the moment, so I’ll leave it at that and go to amazon, see how much it all ads up to…

Tattoos: Steampunk 20/02/2010

Wikipedia says:

Steampunk is a sub-genre of science fiction and speculative fiction, frequently featuring elements of fantasy, that came into prominence in the 1980s and early 1990s. The term denotes works set in an era or world where steam power is still widely used — usually the 19th century, and often Victorian era England — but with prominent elements of either science fiction or fantasy, such as fictional technological inventions like those found in the works of H. G. Wells and Jules Verne, or real technological developments like the computer occurring at an earlier date. Other examples of steampunk contain alternate history-style presentations of “the path not taken” of such technology as dirigibles, analog computers, or digital mechanical computers (such as Charles Babbage’s Analytical engine); these frequently are presented in an idealized light, or with a presumption of functionality.”

Been playing Arcanum all day (but giving up, slowly) so I thought I’d do a steampunk type post. Here goes. As always, original artwork available via click on the thumbnail.

I’m feeling like cherry trees today, so this will be the theme of today’s list. I realize it’s terribly pink, but I can’t help it 🙂

Clicking on an image will lead you to the original artwork. Please go see, so I don’t get in trouble.

ModCloth – Dresses 04/02/2010

Most of the people who know me have never seen me wear a dress. This does not mean I do not like dresses. I do. So don’t be surprised by the quantity 🙂

ModCloth is completely wonderful and I look at their stuff and think “I want this… and this… and this… and I need to sell a kidney… and this… and this…”

Chick Flicks List 19/01/2010

Filed under: Lists — Tasha @ 11:50 AM

My best friend, Isidora, and I have been planning a chick flick movie night/pajama party for about a year. I always let the team down by screwing up my exams and not being able to visit. It’s been so long since we came up with the idea, that we both forgot which movies we wanted to watch, so I decided to keep track of movies that come to mind here.

These are arranged in no particular order.

  1. 10 things I hate about you
  2. Pretty woman
  3. Runaway bride
  4. You’ve got mail
  5. Sleepless in Seattle (You just can’t mention “You’ve got mail” without mentioning this one, although it doesn’t even come close… at least not for me)
  6. City of angels
  7. French kiss
  8. When Harry met Sally
  9. Kate and Leopold (I hereby end the Meg Ryan portion of our program)
  10. Somebody like you (bugger Hugh Jackman for not being in more chick flicks. Inconsiderate bastard. I love him!)
  11. Romy and Michelle
  12. Catch and release
  13. P.S: I love you (I always confuse Hilary Swank with Jeniffer Garner)
  14. Funny girl
  15. Room with a view (gotta love the huge hair and the even huger eyebrows)
  16. Dirty dancing (Isidora doesn’t like this one, but she recently took up salsa, so I’m hoping she’ll be more open to dance movies)
  17. Moonstruck
  18. Mermaids
  19. The witches of Eastwick (end Cher section :))
  20. Working girl (only movie where I can look at Melanie Griffith
  21. Ghost
  22. Four weddings and a funeral
  23. Love actually
  24. Notting hill (although I never liked it much)
  25. Bridget Jones Diary
  26. Bridget Jones on the edge of reason (and I didn’t like this one either) (enough Hugh Grant)
  27. Pride and prejudice (Helloooooo, Mr Firth!)
  28. Hope springs
  29. Shakespeare in love (not enough Firth, bugger it!)
  30. It could happen to you
  31. Counterfeit contessa
  32. Mrs Winterbourne
  33. Dangerous beauty
  34. Now and then
  35. Still breathing
  36. Blast from the past
  37. Clueless
  38. Bridges of Madison county (mind you, somebody referring to Clint Eastwood as sexy makes me uncomfortable)
  39. While you were sleeping
  40. Hope floats
  41. 28 days
  42. Miss congeniality
  43. The lake house (hahahahahaha… time traveling mailbox…. hahahahahahahaha *dies*)
  44. First wives club
  45. Overboard
  46. The banger sisters
  47. Meet Joe Black (this is one of my dad’s favorite movies)

  50. Legally blond
  51. Just like heaven
  52. Sweet home Alabama
  53. Penelope
  54. The wedding planner

  56. My big fat Greek wedding
  57. My life in ruins
  58. Connie and Carla (women pretending to be men who pretend to be women… plus I think Nia Vardalos is cool, even if her eyebrows are a bit strange)
